Student life comes with a familiar challenge: there’s always something you need, something you want, or something you wish you could get without spending more money.
But what if you didn't always have to worry about that?
Imagine that the headphones you barely use could help you get those shoes you've been looking for. Or that something taking up space in your room could be exactly what another student has been trying to find.
Suddenly, the question changes from “How much does it cost?” to “What do I have that someone else might value?”
That was one of the ideas we brought to Mechlympics at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), where TradebyBartr connected with students and introduced them to a different way of exchanging value.
Taking Barter Trading to the University of Lagos
As part of our ongoing activations, we attended Mechlympics at UNILAG to meet students, and show them how barter trading can create new possibilities.
University campuses are full of people with different needs, interests, belongings, and priorities. One student's unused item could be another student's much needed find. The challenge is making that connection.
This is where TradebyBartr comes in.
Instead of automatically reaching for your wallet whenever you need something, you can explore what you already own and consider what you might be able to exchange for it all within a few minutes.
At Mechlympics, we brought this idea directly to the student community, introducing them to TradebyBartr and showing them how the platform makes it possible to connect with others for easy value-for-value exchanges.
We walked students through how the platform works and helped them sign up and get started. More importantly, we introduced a simple but powerful possibility: what you already have could be the starting point for getting something you need.
You Have More Value Than You Think
For many people, getting something they need begins and ends with having the money to buy it. But what if there were another option?
We all have things we bought, received, or acquired that no longer serve us the way they once did. Maybe our interests have changed. Maybe we've upgraded. Maybe an item has simply been sitting around unused for months.
But an item losing its usefulness to you doesn't mean it has lost its value entirely.
Someone else might be looking for exactly that item. And they might have something you're interested in, too.
That's the opportunity behind barter trading. When two people find an exchange that works for both of them, something that was previously overlooked can become useful again.
For students navigating campus life, this opens up a different way to think about the things they own and the possibilities around them.
You might already have something that can get you closer to what you want. You just haven't found the right exchange yet.
Mechlympics Was One Stop. The Possibilities Go Beyond Campus.
One of the most important parts of this activation was getting to interact directly with students as we introduced them to TradebyBartr, answered questions about how the platform works, and guided them through the sign-up process.
More importantly, we showed them how barter trading could help ease some of the pressure of having to reach into their pockets every time they needed something. By exchanging what they already have for what they need, they can explore another way to get value without every transaction having to involve money.
Our presence at UNILAG was part of a bigger idea: making value-for-value trading something more people can understand, access, and explore in their everyday lives.
TradebyBartr is built around the belief that exchange doesn't have to revolve entirely around money. People have different things to offer, different things they need, and opportunities to find common ground.
And this idea isn't limited to university students. It applies to anyone who has something of value and is open to exchanging it for something else.
Mechlympics gave us an opportunity to bring that conversation to a new community, introduce students to another way of trading, and help them take their first steps onto the platform.
Because sometimes, the solution to getting what you need isn't necessarily buying something new. It could be finding someone who has it and wants what you have.

So, What Do You Have to Trade?
Think about that item you no longer use. The one you've outgrown, replaced, or forgotten about.
Now imagine that someone out there is looking for it.
What could you get in return?
That's a question worth exploring.
TradebyBartr connects people who want to exchange what they have for what they need, creating opportunities to find value in unexpected places.
Our time at Mechympics was another opportunity to bring that possibility to students at UNILAG. Now, it's your turn to see what an exchange could look like for you.
